One the topic of how fiber-optic internet to the home would improve our lives in just about every way, I want to talk again about digital learning days. During our week of snow days, I talked a lot with Greg Baker about how fiber to the home could be used for digital learning days. The problem with that now is, since we don't have a city-wide fiber-optic network and the low-income options provided by the big telecoms are totally inadequate and not available everywhere, we can't guarantee that every student could participate. By state law, we have to be able to guarantee every student an adequate connection to have digital learning days. With the outbreak of the Coronavirus, some institutions in Seattle, like state universities hooked up to state fiber, are offering online lessons as an alternative. Not only does this have the benefit of allowing students to keep learning without physically interacting and spreading Coronavirus, but it keeps institutions from having to take the costly measure of closing down when there is an outbreak. As we continue to make our world smaller with technological advancements, we should also have better options for outbreaks.
