Happy New Year, amazing public fiber supporters! After 3 years in waiting, the COB has finally released a dark fiber map to compliment other incomplete maps they've released in the past. This map specifically shows the fiber that is NOT in use and therefore can be leased or used for other purposes. We should also note that most of this fiber sits in at least 1.5" or 2" conduit and can easily be expanded to at least 144 strand runs easily, the max being 867 strands in a 2-inch conduit. Modern equipment is also capable of easily running at least 8 wavelengths per strand of fiber without replacing the fiber. So every number you see here should be multiplied by 8 for the number of services it can provide. For example, when you see 48 available strands, it could provide 384 services, 144 strands would be 1,152 services, even 8 strands would provide 64 services. So while I have decided to be optimistic, we should also remember who we're dealing with. The COB public works director has gone as far as to make a False Dig Once Policy, see previous updates, and will probably try to argue that all of this dark fiber is somehow not useful. The truth is that we could start leasing it out to local Net-Neutral providers, co-ops, non-profits, etc. if we wanted to tomorrow. Here's the map.
