In April I asked you to show up to speak out about public broadband and to Support a Dig Once Policy to keep our government from silently trying to kill it. Now I ask you to do so again on July 23rd at 6:40pm at City Hall, since the "policy" our public works department prepared is intentionally inadequate. We need to show three things this time. 1. That there is still support for public broadband which requires a well researched Dig Once Policy, based on policies from other successful towns, to succeed. 2. That they need to include local providers and experts in their discussions at the same level as they have included big telecoms in the past. Especially impartial experts. 3. That we expect them to base the policy off of other successful policies, and documents, that other successful towns with public broadband have been using. Re-creating the wheel makes no sense. Other towns have offered us their documents, most are available for free, and we'd be foolish not to modify them for our use. Here is the link to the Facebook event. https://www.facebook.com/events/1054052041411939/ For those who don't use Facebook, we will be meeting outside of City Hall (210 Lottie St.) at 6:00pm to hold up Dig Once Now signs. Those wishing to speak, should show up at 6:40pm to sign up to speak. You will have 3 minutes to comment to the council. If you don't want to speak, please at least show up to support it. We have created a website with a great deal of information about broadband in Bellingham for reference. (Note: We are still working on the look).
