Mise à jour sur la pétitionBellingham/Whatcom County Publicly Owned Fiber Optic NetworkCOB Still Stonewalling On Proposed Dig Once Documents

30 juin 2018 — Note: The recent AT&T/Time Warner "Merger" (I put it in double quotes because it looks like a buy out to me...) makes this project even more important this week as we will probably start seeing real censorship by the big telecoms very soon. Last time I sent an updated I wrote about Michael Lilliquist's and all of our concerns surrounding the proposed Dig Once Documents to be voted on in either July or August. I have been trying to get the proposed documents from the COB but it looks like they are probably going to try to do something quickly in the background and slide it through as quickly as possible without any transparency or opportunity for local experts to weigh in on this crucial document. Here is my last e-mail of concern to the council and mayor. Please call them. I've provided the link to their contact information here https://www.cob.org/contacts E-Mail to Council, Mayor and Public Works Director: Hello, I am writing again to ask where the proposed documents for the upcoming "Dig Once" policy are that we've requested before. I am still unsure why we are reinventing the wheel on this policy when we have hundreds of Dig Once Policies to use from hundreds of other successful projects. We need only do a few modifications to most of them. Anyway, it is inappropriate for these documents to be withheld from the public before being voted on. They need to be provided at least 2 weeks in advance so your local experts can look over them and make suggestions. We should have as many pros as possible look at these documents before they are voted on. Right now, the plan seems to be to make the policy a policy in name only by setting the thresholds so high that it won't work. We also are wondering why our government consistently acts in this fashion with how it approaches the community on just about every topic. You have good, free, resources to use and citizens willing to help improve their community. Why the lack of transparency? Why the lack of useful collaboration? Are you planing on just shoe-horning this critical document in at the last minute with the hopes that no one will notice? This behavior doesn't inspire confidence in the citizens. The AT&T/Time Warner "Merger" this week should show us all that we are well beyond the critical mark when it comes to telecom and our rights. We are looking at real censorship by the telecoms, including that of our news sources, and you can help by creating real, publicly owned, infrastructure along the lines that we've outlined countless times before. It is not too hard or too expensive to do. Thanks, Jon
