Fire Police Officers Who Use Excessive Force

The Issue

Federal juries have found that Syracuse,NY Police Officers Joseph Mauro, Damon Lockett and Paul Montalto used excessive force.

The City of Syracuse taxpayers are burdened with the legal bills for defending police brutality suits (the city hired big firm attorney John Powers in the Elijah Johnson case); and the money paid to the victims of police brutality.

Moreover, people are scared to call police because people like Alonzo Grant ended up being brutally beaten when he did so.  People are feeling unsafe driving through the streets of Syracuse for fear of being pulled over, yanked from the cars, and beaten for infractions like loud music.

Yet, officers do not face any consequences when they use excessive force.  The District Attorney, the Chief of Police and Police Union President fail to at least fire and charge these officers.  They face no consequences, and are even promoted.

This must stop.  Syracuse residents need to feel safe, and have confidence and trust in their police force.
