Update on Side/Back Trash Collection – Meeting Thursday 11/12 - What you can do now

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Joint Sanitation Commission will meet Thursday evening 11/12 at 6 pm with the boards of both Village and Town to further discuss possible changes to our trash collection. This meeting can be viewed on LMCTV channel 76 (link below). Several of us will “attend”, but there is no provision for public commentary.
What you can do now to help preserve side/back trash collection is to write a quick email if you have not yet done so to our Village Mayor, Town Supervisors, and Trustees, copying all of them on one email, so that your opinion can be heard. A simple email expressing that you would like side/back trash collection preserved will influence how they perceive public opinion – we have heard them refer to emails received, the petition, and public commentary from the zoom meeting on Oct. 26th as to how they read the public volition on this issue.
That we have continued the discussion and forestalled a vote has been a victory thus far. The Town/Village leaders are now asking Town Supervisor Altieri for a deeper look into how we can revise our sanitation collection process and the various costs/services involved. In lieu of a quick vote and service elimination that was threatened, our leaders are now trying to learn more because they have heard from the public. They have had several work sessions on the issue which we have viewed.
Sample points for one email that you can send:
- Please continue side/back trash collection as it is a valued service that helps keep our streetscapes clear of bins and trash.
- We would like to model our trash collection system on Scarsdale and Pelham, both of which have recently changed their systems and kept side/back trash collection and added food scraps collection.
- Our sanitation workers are paid as full time employees with benefits and pension. They currently work 3-4 hours per day. Perhaps by reworking the schedules we can achieve all our trash collection goals at no extra cost?
- We question the direction of Town Administrator Altieri of revising trash collection to meet the limitations of an aging workforce. We think the worker should meet the job description and not visa versa.
Send your opinion to Supervisors/Mayor/Trustees in one email:

Here below please see/link to an article summarizing Pelham’s new trash system overhaul which preserved side/back collection and added food scraps collection. Scarsdale’s overhaul 2 years ago led to this same mix with twice weekly trash collection and we believe we can achieve similar results.
