Reinstate back/side of the house trash pickup - to Pre-Covid law
The Issue
The Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont are considering changing the law regarding trash collection to eliminate the option of side/back of the house trash pickup, a service that has been in place for many years. During the Pandemic "stay at home" order, the Joint Sanitation commission suspended side/back of the house pickup to avoid having people enter homeowner properties. Now, they'd like to make that change permanent to save money - estimated at $10 per resident per year ($200,000, or 1/3 of 1% of the joint budget or .003%). The JS believes this savings is attainable by having fewer employees.
Many residents would like to continue to have the option of either street or side/back pickup, and not permanently suspend the side/back of the house trash pickup choice. Residents believe having the option should be reinstated for a variety of reasons:
1. Trash bins on the street make for an ugly streetscape. Bins are often put out the day before, and left out until the following end of day due to residents work schedule. With 2 trash collections per week, this makes for 3-4 days of bins on the street, which are sometimes blown over, with trash bits sometimes scattered.
2. Many residents have a significant distance between their bins and the street and it is difficult to get the heavy bins to the street. Residents greatly appreciate the side/back pickup option.
3. The savings seems to be minimal considering the size of the overall budget. Several residents reference the high taxes paid and consider this to be a worthwhile expenditure. The Town/Village has indicated that the savings would not be "returned" to the residents.
Please sign the petition if you feel that having a choice (either on the street or side/back pickup) is the best way to accommodate residents preferences. There will be a joint hearing via zoom on Oct. 26th on this issue. Thank you.
