LA/Ma Board Meeting Tonight 6 pm re: Elimination Side/Back Trash Collection. Update and How to Help.

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Joint Sanitation Commission will meet tonight, Wednesday 11/9 at 6 pm, with the boards of both Village and Town to further discuss changes to our trash collection.  This meeting can be viewed on zoom (link below).  Several of us will watch, but there is no provision for public commentary.

As we “attend” the meetings and developments, it seems that both Mayor Walsh of Larchmont and Town Supervisor Seligson of Mamaroneck have been convinced by Town Administrator Altieri to eliminate side/back of the house trash collection, although there has not yet been presented a convincing document or accumulated set of facts that would support this direction.  We have not yet seen any deep dive into the issue that would signal a comprehensive overhaul to our trash collection that could modernize how we collect, what we collect, and preserve side/back as our neighboring communities have done (Scarsdale, Pelham, + 10 etc).

A few board members do seem to be on the fence about eliminating side/back because they seem to recognize residents desire for this valued service, which helps keep our streetscapes clean and clear.

What you can do NOW:

The emails they are receiving from us matter!  Please email the list below to remind them your of your desire to maintain side/back trash collection, and ask them to take the time to thoroughly examine our trash collection system and redeploy the budgets allocated to make better use of our resources to include side/back, food scraps collection, and model after what other similar communities have done.

As the pandemic emergency is likely to last at least to summer 2021, postpone a decision on curbside and other sanitation changes until then, and with residents input (survey, committee, task force, etc.), develop a comprehensive sanitation plan that would take effect post pandemic.

Additional points for one email that you can send:

-  Please continue side/back trash collection as it is a valued service that helps keep our streetscapes clear of bins and trash.

-  Model our trash collection system on Scarsdale and Pelham, both of which have recently changed their systems and kept side/back trash collection and added food scraps collection.

-  Revise our sanitation employees work flow.  They are currently paid as full time employees with benefits and pension and currently work 3-4 hours per day.  We believe by reworking the schedules we can achieve all our trash collection goals at no extra cost.

-  We as residents do not approve of arriving at a decision and THEN digging for defense of it.  We feel a comprehensive review and overhaul of how we collect garbage and pay for that service should be undertaken BEFORE we decide on any changes.

Here is a link to Scarsdale’s sanitation overhaul study 2 years ago which led to the preservation of side/back and inclusion of food scraps curbside collection.  Larchmont and Mamaroneck together have a similar population to Scarsdale.
