NO to “Resort Bubbles”!

The Issue

Aloha.

The other day, Mayor Victorino held a press conference discussing the (very likely) possibility of Maui resorts implementing a “Resort Bubble” which would not only mean the state opening back up to tourists, but that beaches fronting the resort will be closed off to the public. The only thing that this “solution” shows is that money is far more important than the local community.
Another portion of this “Resort Bubble” proposal states that employees will need to stay on premises for 5 straight days and then if anyone they work with tests positive... they stay for an extra two weeks on premises. What?! What about single parents that literally CANNOT leave their children home by themselves for five days? Never mind the fact that nobody wants to work for 5 days without seeing friends, family, loved ones, or even going HOME! But, the problem is that if they say no, they won’t receive unemployment because they are denying work, so essentially they have no other option.
This plan is absurd and it is embarrassing that our local government can be so cavalier about turning the lives of our local communities upside down to cater to tourists.
