HEENA PATEL started this petition to mayor@towerhamlets.gov.uk and

We are extremely saddened and disappointed to hear that Tower Hamlets CCG have cut the funding and made the decision to end our much-needed Rethink Mental Illness carer support service - and as a result the service is set to close on the 31st March 2021. WE NEED YOUR HELP BEFORE THIS HAPPENS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.

Rethink has played an integral part in the local community support for the superheroes and superheroines that are our carers in the Tower Hamlets borough. It has been very rare to find such a dedicated and regular service with such lovely staff and counsellors that pay full attention to the "carer" - rather than the "cared for".

Many of the carers in the Tower Hamlets community care for family members and friends and create such a huge relief on social services (at the compromise of living our own lives most of the time) - yet we still fall amongst the forgotten hearts and hands that improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable in our community - and Rethink have been there to support us through it all.

Carers are not used to being priority or put first and spend most of their lives living in the shadows and engulfed by their role and responsibilities for the person(s) they care for. Rethink changed that. Rethink have given carers support that the local Carers Centre have not had the resources to provide including:

  • Combatting social and emotional isolation as a carer
  • Weekly/b--weekly/monthly check-ins for over a year with a counsellor (not available on any other local service)
  • Social events including Christmas parties and Eid celebrations :)
  • A network of carers to connect with who better understand our day-to-day challenges.
  • 1:1 support with managing our mental health as carers
  • Educated support on caring for those with mental health challenges, specifically
  • Training
  • Group support
  • Walking groups and trips to Winter Wonderland and even Bruges
  • Cooking classes
  • Gardening groups
  • Wellbeing and fitness groups and therapy
  • Respite (time to indulge in our own self care or desires even if only a few hours away from our caring duties).

There are now additional challenges and pressures on carers and the people we care for as a result of worsening mental health, difficulty accessing services and increasing anxiety around contracting COVID-19 - and not to forget rising rates of unemployment and declining number of vacancies that make finances and mental wellbeing that much harder for carers and those they care for. And now is the time that the funding has been cut!

Please sign and share this with anyone and everyone to assist in maintaining the wellbeing of carers and their "cared for" in Tower Hamlets.
