Scarborough needs a Rapid Transit Network

Scarborough needs a Rapid Transit Network
The Issue
Toronto Council should scrap the Scarborough Subway Extension (SSE) and return to building the Scarborough LRT now. Council did not have all the facts when they voted to replace the Scarborough LRT with a subway.
An LRT network, is still the best way to address Scarborough's transit shortfall:
We need rapid transit across Scarborough, not just to downtown.
Smart Track and the Scarborough Subway Extension are focussed on getting riders downtown, meanwhile Scarborough's outer neighbourhoods, college and university campuses are being left behind. An LRT network including the Scarborough, Sheppard and Malvern LRTs would ensure access to both downtown and to destinations across Scarborough.
A subway would drain money from the rest of the TTC system.
A single line, with only three stops or four stops, running through low density, residential neighbourhoods is unlikely to be cost effective. Like the Sheppard Subway, low ridership on the Scarborough Subway Extension would drain money from the rest of the TTC system.
An LRT network is the most effective way to tackle traffic congestion.
With 47 stops, the Scarborough, Sheppard, and Malvern LRTs would bring more jobs, redevelopment, walkability and connectivity to more residents in Scarborough. With an LRT network they don't have to own a car or commute downtown to get to work. This is a much more effective way to reduce traffic congestion and bring economic renewal to our outer neighbourhoods.
The Scarborough, Sheppard and Malvern LRTs are fast, modern and shovel ready now, not ten years from now.
All the studies and approvals are in place. Both the Scarborough and Sheppard LRTs are funded by the Province. Funding for the Malvern LRT could be covered by the City's 1.6% tax increase for the Scarborough Subway Extension.
Every major city in the world is getting a move on with modern and cost-effective LRT systems.
Even Canadian cities like Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Hamilton and Waterloo are building LRTs.
A publicly built and run LRT network will ensure our new transit infrastructure investment serves the people of Toronto, not private profit.
It’s not too late to scrap the Scarborough Subway. Vote for a publicly run, rapid transit network for Scarborough. Build the Scarborough, Sheppard and Malvern LRTs now.
