Dear Superintendent Lolli and administration of Dayton Public Schools, please accept this petition as our formal appeal.

For many student athletes within the Dayton Public Schools system, athletics is not merely a means of recreation, it is a way of life. Dayton, Ohio ranks among the nation’s top 10 most dangerous mid-sized cities According to a 2019 FBI Uniform Crime Report. Dayton, Ohio also represents the nation’s third poorest mid-sized city according to the World Population Review (2018). Many DPS student athletes use athletics as an avenue to purse higher education after graduation to open the doors of opportunity that will help alleviate the cycles of despair in our marginalized Dayton community. Many professional athletes are alumni of DPS’ venerable and renowned athletic programs. To strip our athletic programs from us will strip away the promising futures many of us look to sports to provide for us.

In the wake of the global travesty regarding COVID-19, many lives have been affected. We understand the severity of its implications and are fully committed to comply with federal, state, and local guidelines to help prevent its spread. According to the World Health Organization, a properly fit mask blocks 95% of airborne particles which significantly disrupts the possible transmission of COVID-19. We have complied with these guidelines at conditioning and practices thus far and have had no reports of COVID-19 from any DPS student athlete. On Friday, July 31, the OHSAA Board of Directors reaffirmed their position that the OHSAA fall sports season will go forward as planned, which means many Ohio districts still have a season to look forward to and the opportunity to be recruited for college athletic programs. For many of us, sports is our only way out. Through sports we gain a sense of pride in seeing our hard work paying off on the field or court, we build a cohesive bond with our peers through teamwork and sportsmanship, and receive positive motivation from coaching staff that many of us rely on. Our appeal is that you reconsider this decision and consider evidence-based provisions and precautions that serve to protect students while allowing us to do what we love.

Very respectfully,

The student athletes and student athlete supporters of Dayton Public Schools
