Tell Mayor French of CBS, Newfoundland to rescind cuts to Humane Services
The town council of Conception Bay South has voted unanimously to cut funding to the town's Humane Services Department. Mayor French has stated that the level of funding previously offered was above and beyond what other municipalities were offering and that it was not sustainable. These cuts have reduced Humane Services Department staff by half. This will result in dogs being left alone in their cages for 16 hours a day with no way to get out to use the bathroom. The cuts also mean changes for the animal adoption program. Animals will no longer be vetted, vaccinated, spayed or neutered. In addition to this, under the new policy the town will no longer accept pets that are surrendered by their owners. Mayor French says that our town can no longer afford to provide homeless pets with 'Cadilac Services'. This very regressive, unjust and cruel decision will result in many sad and unnecessary deaths of innocent animals.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated (Gandhi). The former Humane Services Program in Conception Bay South was progressive and very much in keeping with the current social climate. Under this program pets were vetted, spayed/neutered, well cared for and put up for adoption. This resulted in very few cats and dogs being killed. It was a point of pride for the community and the Town Council. We are not asking for more than this. We are simply asking that the town maintain this valuable and necessary level of service that has been sustained for the past number of years and should continue to exist.
Let's keep the 'humane' in Humane Services and tell Mayor French that this decision is not acceptable and it will not be tolerated.
