Safe Community Means a Crosswalk at SW Carson X SW 45th

The Issue

Petition for Support of Signalized Crosswalk at SW 45th and SW Carson

To: Honorable Mayor Ted Wheeler, Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, Commissioner Nick Fish, Commissioner JoAnn Hardesty, Interim Director of Portland Bureau of Transportation, Chris Warner.

Sign the petition and show your support for pedestrian and cycling safety in South West Portland.

We, the undersigned South West Neighborhood District community members respectfully bring to your attention the following critical neighborhood safety issue and recommended solutions.

Problem. Due to increased traffic flows and congestion, our community streets disproportionately favor the automobile at the expense of the safety and lives of neighborhood residents. Latest pedestrian fatality: Beloved friend and neighbor, Ortud Vatheuer

Solution. To promote pedestrian and cycling safety install an accessibility crosswalk at the intersection of SW 45th and SW Carson.

Request

  • Immediately conduct research into the traffic volume (including pedestrians) at the intersection of SW 45th and SW Carson and the associated arterial, sub-arterial and collector roads. Include forecasting with current data from factors including, updates of building permits, housing permits, Gabriel park improvements and other constructing / plans of other destination spots.
  • Construct signalized crosswalk at the intersection of SW 45th and SW Carson by the end of the September 2019:
  • Install pelican, puffin (pedestrian user friendly intelligent crossing) or the type of sign designed to allow / create sufficient time for people with disabilities to safely cross the road. ADA signage at the crosswalk and include foot-activated pedals / paddles for the purpose of ensuring accessibility for persons using a wheelchair.
  • Include rectangular rapid flash (amber) beacon at the crosswalk to provide the most effective traffic control means.
  • Install traffic cameras for monitoring Southbound and Northbound traffic.
  • Include a plaque including the name of Ortud Vatheuer “Beloved Friend and Neighbor”
  • Lower the speed rate from 30mph to 20 mph for 500 feet before and after the intersection of SW 45th and SW Carson.

Tell the Mayor and City Commissioners that you care about pedestrian and cycling safety by signing the petition today.

Respectfully,

SW Community Action Group members
