Terry Schrunk Plaza across from Portland City Hall was dedicated to Terry Schrunk, a former Portland mayor, in 1977. Terry Schrunk is not a hero and does not deserve this honor. The whitewashed Portland history often heralds Terry Schrunk as a leader in urban renewal. What it leaves out is the destruction of vibrant black neighborhoods that were torn apart again and again by his policies. He described black neighborhoods as blight. Black neighborhoods were seized and leveled to make way for parks, gardens, and high-rise office and apartment buildings. The impact of these policies is obvious in today's Rose Quarter, along I-5 and 99, and in the Williams corridor which used to be the vibrant Albina neighborhood. Stop revering racist leaderships that only benefited white Portlanders! Rename Terry Schrunk Plaza NOW! 

Mayor Ted Wheeler and Council Members Jo Ann Hardesty, Chloe Eudaly, Amanda Fritz - rename Terry Schrunk Plaza for a black Portland leader or one that lost their life too soon to violence like Lloyd Stevenson. Make amends, make change. NOW.
