Thank you! We broke 1000 signatures. On Friday, Mayor Wheeler finally admitted that the grossly disproportionate number of homeless arrests is a problem, more than two weeks after the Oregonian published the data. The mayor continues to insist that he has the “right strategy,” which is bizarre since it has lead to the police arresting homeless people for low-level offenses at a shockingly high rate. In the meantime, more community leaders and organizations have endorsed the petition, including the Democratic Socialists of America (Portland), Portland Civil Rights Law Office, Nadya Okamoto or Period Movement, and Cameron Whitten of Brown Hope. While we are encouraged that the mayor has finally come to accept that there is a problem, the mayor has not promised to change the way Portland polices the homeless. Your voice is being heard in City Hall. Let’s keep up the pressure until the mayor chooses compassion over cops.
