Justice for Sami
Sami was the beloved dog of disabled combat veteran Bobby Shultz, from Phoenix, Arizona. On Saturday, May 10, 2014, Sami was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer in front of his home.
According to Shultz, Sami was a kind and gentle pit bull, and was a wonderful companion to his young son, Jason. “While stationed in Texas my son would come to spend time throughout the year with me. One day after my son returned to AZ I couldn't find Sami. Finally I notice he had opened Jason's door and was on his bed. At that point I realized that my son really was ‘Sami's best friend,’” said Shultz.
“As a father the hardest thing I have ever had to do was tell my son what had happened. Trying to hold in my own emotion and be strong as a father while seeing my little boy’s world devastated. I am so thankful he did not witness this heinous attack on Sami. But seeing the police markings from the bullet casings in front of our house still makes it hard and a everyday reminder. Tougher still is my son shows interest in becoming a police officer and has attended summer camp with a local pd. But trying to properly pursue this case with the shooter being an officer and the responding officer mishandling the case to cover it up while having tact to protect my son. Just so heartbreaking for everybody,” he added.
Shultz said he will never forget the agony he felt when Sami died in his arms. He was laying on the ground beside him with tears rolling down his cheeks, as he said his last goodbye to his faithful friend.
On that fateful day, Sami was chased down and shot in front of the family’s home. After shooting the dog, the officer then proceeded to threaten Shultz with the gun. Apparently, a botched police report with misleading and missing information, covered up and protected the officer.
Unfortunately, this is not the only case where pit bulls have been needlessly killed by police officers. Pit bulls by nature are non-aggressive dogs, and can make ideal family companions, if raised by a qualified breeder, and placed in a loving home. They are even affectionate, loyal and gentle with children. If we do not make these cases heard, the injustice towards other family pets will continue.
