Murfreesboro, TN is an incredibly diverse community in a diverse county. In part because of Middle Tennessee State University, because of the presence of Nissan in neighboring Smyrna, and simply because of the welcoming nature of this city to those looking for a safe and healthy community to put down roots in, our city is home to people from a wide array of cultural, religious, and social backgrounds.

Nonetheless, our community has struggled with fairly representing the needs and voices of the marginalized. Our city was home to a painful fight over the religious freedom of our Muslim community. Our city consistently ranks among the lowest in Tennessee on the HRC LGBT Equality Index. Many in our city are indifferent to our local government because they feel it does not represent their interests.

It's time we start changing that.

Mufreesboro needs a human rights commission that will ensure that the voices of our many communities are heard before the city government. No matter one's ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, we all are worth being heard. This commission will ensure that problems affecting marginalized communities are identified and addressed, and that the needs of the least privileged are treated with equal dignity and urgency as those who hold the most power.
