Bring fine dining and a place for the community to break bread back to Shoreview MN.
The Issue
My family and I moved to the community of Shoreview, MN about a year and a half ago. We have absolutely loved learning about and exploring this great city and we are very excited to put our roots down deep in this community. One of the main reasons we moved here is the great school district, the wonderful parks, and the fantastic Shoreview Commons area.
We noticed very quickly that something was missing: there is no fine dining or nicer tavern options in the city whatsoever. We have found that many of our neighbors and people we have talked to agree that a nice restaurant would be a wonderful and welcome addition to the community. The city now has an opportunity to help a fine dining establishment, tavern, or something of that nature open up in here in Shoreview as a perfect open spot has presented itself in conjunction with the new Kowalskis.
Instead, a brick and mortar bank is proposing they build in that spot and I think it's time the community speaks up. There is a significant reason the city should consider doing whatever it can to help a fine dining establishment come to the community.
Similar to gas stations, brick & mortar branch retail banks are unlikely to stick around in this world with more and more banking done online. Historically there was a strong belief in the banking industry for local retail branches, as much for PR as anything, and some banks still hold on to this but reality is passing that idea by. Many millennials have never seen the inside of a bank and never will.
Cities like Shoreview need to think strategically about the future and what kind of future they want. Will that North American Banking branch be vacated in 4 or 7 years? What then? How many people looking for a place to live ask their realtor where the nearest bank is? How many want to know what restaurants are nearby, can they safely walk or ride bikes there, and do they have healthy food on the menu? Bottom line, people don't desire houses near banks.
This community is longing for a place to gather to enjoy a nice meal or enjoy a beverage while discussing the days events. Let's band together to show the city and Kowalskis what we as a community think is important! Let's help a fine dining restaurant or tavern come to this community by offering incentives to make it happen. Sign this petition if you would like to see that happen.
