Stop unwarranted and unhealthy chemical spraying in Deerfield
The Issue
Lake County and South Lake Mosquito abatement district are allowed by the Village of Deerfield to spray ineffective toxic chemicals throughout out Village in an effort to manage mosquito populations. These practices have been proven to be ineffective, unsafe for humans and pets, and detrimental to pollinator populations and wildlife. There is really no upside to continuing this dangerous practice.
In addition, there is currently not even a process to efficiently opt out.
There are multiple more effective and safer options which can be discussed with the Village and/or the South Lake Mosquito abatement district as necessary, but first we are demanding that they hear our concerns.
This article discusses the ineffectiveness of universal spraying: https://www.ecowatch.com/mosquito-spraying-ineffective-and-toxic-to-wildlife-and-humans-1881792509.html?fbclid=IwAR3JnpG2FQPm4WLdQeXIEiHOny06brHhxGdX2vQr9-N_HfNH3dghx_TWQq8
These are quotes from the chemical label used in Deerfield as well as the link to read the Manufacturer's documents yourself: "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN, PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS, HAZARDS TO HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS" "This pesticide is toxic to aquatic organisms, including fish and aquatic inverte- brates. Runoff from treated areas or deposition of spray droplets into a body of water may be hazardous to fish and aquatic invertebrates."" This product is highly toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment on blooming crops or weeds. Do not apply this product or allow it to drift to blooming crops or weeds while bees are foraging the treatment area" https://www.clarke.com/filebin/productpdf/merus3.0.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1hxoKJsn_vEJRouzD6QjehNNQfyLLV_ArqNVauZKNpOlh2LH5syiWkZrY
