Stop Oakville from Cutting Down 96 Trees on Lakeshore Road

The Issue

The Towne of Oakville has made plans to cut down 96 mature trees on the sides of Lakeshore because they want to build a sidewalk on the other side of the road and a safer path for bikers. This is unnecessary, because a simple solution to make the road safer is to simply re-pave it so that bikers don’t have to dodge holes in the road. A second sidewalk is also not necessary since there is an existing sidewalk on one side of the road. The Towne of Oakville will plant more trees in the place of the ones they cut down, but not mature ones. Young saplings do not absorb as much carbon as mature ones, so to achieve the same amount of absorption as the mature trees, the Towne of Oakville would need to plant approximately 300 young trees. That would be inefficient and expensive.

They are trying to make the downtown longer with more wide roads like the ones in downtown, but doing so will encourage

  • Companies to buy property next to the road
  • Cutting down more trees to make more roads with houses
  • Urban sprawl and the slow environmental downfall of our community

Please take half a second of your life to sign this petition, because it isn’t too late just yet to save our town’s environment, air quality, and our last scenic roadway. It may not be too late just yet to let Mayor Rob Burton know that further urbanization is not the answer.
