Revitalize blighted ABQ mall at Kathryn and San Mateo

The Issue

The City of Albuquerque and the owner should revitalize the blighted mall at Kathryn and San Mateo immediately, as dictated in the International District Sector Draft Plan, dated November 14, 2012. The site has been a nuisance to the local community for over 10 years, with constant complaints to the City by residents and neighboring business owners. It is a dangerous place, with constant drug and alcohol traffic, as well as squatters, for all to see in plain view. One recent example was an early morning shooting/homicide (http://www.kob.com/article/stories/s3695503.shtml#.VNJGaoFHarV). This property is directly adjacent to homes and a school, and is derelict and abandoned.

The residents would like to see a modernized, sustainable, community and family oriented development in it's place built upon Smart Growth strategies. Community involvement at every milestone for this property is being demanded, with the developer taking responsibility to hold stakeholder meetings for the public at every phase. Due to it's proximity to pedestrians and local residents, a medium density, mixed-use, development is needed that meets Americans with Disabilities Guidelines and national design standards and codes. Things residents expect from this property include a grocery, restaurant, coffee shop, gym, a variety of living options (all densities and income levels), professional offices, local shops, green space with trees and shade, a pocket park, a garden, trails, a community health and learning center, a mini-police station, a bike rental kiosk, and ample underground secured parking. Immediate action on this petition is essential to the vitality and health of this community and Albuquerque.
