Save American History... Save Historic & Charming Babylon Village!

Contemplate what comes to mind when asked to describe charming American communities. To many, thoughts turn to bucolic Currier and Ives-like images of small, New England and East End towns; Nantucket, Newport, Cape Cod, Sag Harbor and Greenport provide good examples. Winding, antique streets host historic homes, restaurants and shoppes. Foot traffic is plentiful, brought in by the history and character of the area. Real estate values also reflect the high desirability of this historic character.
These neighborhoods and cities weren't created organically though, they were created by the development of protective codes and laws preventing the demolition of their historic structures. While Babylon Village certainly has all of the ingredients for a charming experience, what it lacks is protection. One by one, history is being demolished and the village charm is rapidly being leveled. In June and July 2017, the Village of Babylon lost three historic buildings to the cruel wrecking ball, two of these buildings were over 200 years old. Two more historic buildings are presently being threatened with demolition and/or significant alteration. Our overall goal is to petition the village board to develop a historic code for the Village, preventing the demolition of historic buildings prior to 1912. We also seek to develop codes of historic preservation, that prevent buildings constructed prior to 1912, from being significantly altered. If you care to see that charm protected for future generations to enjoy or simply for your own enjoyment, please be sure to sign this petition, whether you live, work, or simply just play in the beautiful, historic Village of Babylon.
