MAKE MIDLAND RECYCLE AGAIN, Start a Sustainable and Accessible Recycling Program

MAKE MIDLAND RECYCLE AGAIN, Start a Sustainable and Accessible Recycling Program
The Issue
As a resident of Midland, I am sure you are no stranger to the horrific sight of trash lining our highways and/or stuck in the mesquite bushes. In an effort to clean up our city and reduce the amount of waste that we produce, I am proposing that an action plan to create an accessible and sustainable recycling program be at the forefront of Mayor Payton and the city council's mind.
Midland's recycling program is nonexistent with only two third party recycling centers in the city. With lack of resources and confusing rules on which facility accepts which recyclable material - citizens are not set up for success even if they want to take action.
It goes without saying that recycling is a crucial part in reducing waste and creating a sustainable world for future generations. According to the EPA, about "75% of the American waste stream is recyclable, but only 30% is actually recycled." Additionally, "recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to listen to a full album on your phone. Recycling 100 cans could light your bedroom for two whole weeks." So if recycling is so good for our city and our plant, why is it so inaccessible, underfunded, and not promoted by those we elected to lead us?
This petition is to show Mayor Payton and our city council members that recycling is an important initiative and that the city of Midland should take action. A signature proves to our elected officials that we care about the status of our planet and our city, and that we as their constituents want more a accessible and all encompassing recycling program! We have the opportunity to set a precedent for cities in West Texas and we should seize any chance to make the world a safer place for future generations.
