Fort’s soldiers deserve plaque
Editor:
As important as it is to remove the Jefferson Davis plaque from Washington Park, it is equally important to erect a plaque calling attention to the disgraceful treatment of U.S. Afro-American soldiers from Fort Brown after the so-called Brownsville Raid.
Apologies came far too late from the government, long after they had been removed from the Army.
New plaques are being placed in Brownsville, highlighting classic buildings. All well and good, but the Afro-American soldiers of the frontier must be honored, in an important step toward understanding racism — then and now.

Plaque proposal insults veterans
Editor:
What an insult to the veterans who fought wars for the United States!
Now, comes the idea perhaps to move the Jefferson Davis plaque to Veterans Park, but a mile from Washington Park in Brownsville. Davis fought against the United States in an effort to keep slavery.
Bad idea! Keep that plaque out of Veterans Park!
