Mark Kaswan, Fontera Progressives co-founder, said his organization partnered with Arte Civico Circle last year to poll Brownsville residents on what should be done with the memorial. He said moving it to Veterans Park was the least favored option.

“People, including many veterans, feel this would be an affront to people who fought on behalf of the United States, and the park should not include someone who many consider a traitor," he said.
