On February 27, Frontera Progressives and Arte Civíco Circle held a public forum at the Brownsville Public Library entitled "Race and Racism in the RGV: A Public Forum on the Jefferson Davis Memorial." Three presenters -- Stephanie Álvarez Associate Professor of Mexican American Studies program and Christopher Carmona Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and Faculty Affiliate of Mexican American Studies Program at the UT Rio Grande Valley ; and Debbie Nathan, an investigative journalist and best selling author -- spoke about the history of racism in the Rio Grande Valley and nationally, and how public monuments, including Brownsville's Jefferson Davis memorial, were used to advance the ideology of white supremacy. After the presentation, participants broke up into small groups to discuss a set of options for the memorial, and then cast ballots ranking the options. We are providing people who were unable to attend the forum this opportunity to express their views on what should be done with the memorial. The options build on the feedback already provided to the City of Brownsville, which clearly indicated a desire to remove the memorial from Washington Park. Before completing this ballot, please watch the presentations at https://www.facebook.com/frontera.progressives/videos/152029832102339/. On the ballot, please rank each of the selections from 1 = most preferred to 6 = least preferred. Where the option includes "historical context," this refers to providing information about the white supremacist campaign of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
