In reference to the opinion published Jan. 21 by Walter Plitt, chairman of the Palo Alto National Park Committee, to continue to display the Jefferson Davis monument as “part of our history” shows how a revisionist narrative presents only one point of view: that which is promoted by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. If we are to adhere to Mr. Plitt’s idea of “part of history” as justification for the glorification of crimes, pardoned or not, then the Palo Alto museum also should include a permanent area displaying the Matanza of 1915 in Texas, when Mexican Americans were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. The last time I visited that museum, I recall that its focus was to document the colonization of this area by the new settlers. In his 1931 speech Florida Sen. Duncan Fletcher asked, “We fought to maintain free white domination. Were we defeated?” As long as the Jefferson Davis monument is visible to the public, white domination has not been defeated. We have a serious problem with gatekeepers in strategic positions who want to keep promoting their agendas and control. In Brownsville, these people occupy positions of power, political or otherwise, that maintain Brownsville behind and marginalized. Many of us have come to the conclusion that their time is up. We will not be silenced and we will question those who are paid with our tax dollars. One point of agreement with Mr. Plitt is that we know slavery was not a project invented by the USA. Other empires used it first. We want this Jefferson Davis monument removed from public place immediately. This way Brownsville can make real history.
