Petition updateRELOCATE Jefferson Davis Monument to Museum or Private PropertyWhat's going on in Brownsville?

City commissioners have the authority to vote whether to keep Confederate monuments on public property or relocate them. A few days ago, Commissioner César de León was recorded using the "N" word in a private conversation. Two other commissioners quickly came to his defense. Do the city commissioners feel the same way? Could this be why they're taking their time voting to relocate the Jefferson Davis Monument located in Downtown Brownsville?

You can express your thoughts to the mayor and commissioners of the City of Brownsville by e-mailing them. They need to understand that in a city with a majority population of people of color, a symbol of hate on public property is unacceptable.

On September 21, State Representative Eddie Lucio III presented a proclamation to Texas Southmost College honoring the service of U.S. colored troops at Fort Brown from 1864-1906. Fort Brown would eventually become the campus of Texas Southmost College. He presented this proclamation to TSC board members who still defend the Robert E. Lee name of a college building. Mr. Lucio is on the right track. Why can't TSC properly honor these troops and rename the Robert E. Lee Youth Center?

Do the same with the Texas Southmost College board of trustees. Let them know that a building named after someone who fought to keep slavery legal is also unacceptable.
