My letter to the Mayor and Commissioners of the City of Brownsville has been posted on several blogs. It will also appear in The Brownsville Herald. We plan on speaking with the T.V. media soon. It is in regards to the Jefferson Memorial located at Washington Park in Brownsville, Texas. It was given to the city during a time of racial strife (around the 1920s). Many racist Anglos and Hispanics were in power and happily accepted the gift from the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy. This is the year 2015 and we need to move forward. This park is not welcoming to descendants of those who were enslaved and oppressed in the past. We are not trying to erase history. Traces of slavery belong in history books and museums, not public family parks. Will you join our cause? We would like to replace this monument with respectable leaders from our past, perhaps civil rights activists from history. This park is also in need of a playground. It is embarrassing that several potential candidates for local office have no problem with these racist reminders. One of them in particular constantly likes racist, misogynistic, and homophobic comments and memes on Facebook. Here is a link to our petition. If you support the cause, PLEASE share. https://www.change.org/p/mayor-of-the-city-of-brownsville-texas-commissioners-of-the-city-of-brownsville-texas-remove-the-jefferson-davis-memorial?recruiter=555516&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink We are asking your organization for assistance. We would like to spread the word. Also, please give us ideas or direct me to a person or group who can assist me. If you would like to meet in person (or phone) to discuss this matter, please let me know. Thank you Antonio Castillo 956-640-6332
