London Bus Drivers' Bill of Rights Protest Stops Traffic in Central London
At midday on Wednesday 29 January, hundreds of London Bus Drivers brought traffic to halt in the heart of London. The protest was part of an extended campaign by London Bus Drivers to compel the Mayor of London—in his capacity as TfL Chair—to incorporate a "Bill of Rights" in Transport for London's Framework Bus Contract that haven't been modified since 1 January 2016, months before London's "Vision Zero" Mayor was elected.
Wednesday's protest commenced at Victoria Station with the Bus Drivers holding Minute of Silence for the (at least) 89 people who have been killed in preventable Bus Safety Incidents and the (at least) 76 Bus Drivers who died from Covid-19 while Sadiq Khan has been serving as Mayor and TfL Chair. Escorted by Metropolitan Police and with former TfL Board Director and Safety Panel Chair Michael Liebreich and Deputy Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee Caroline Russell at the front, the Bus Drivers and supporters marched from Victoria down Piccadilly and Leicester Square to Whitehall, finishing at Parliament Square where the protesters were met by MPs and more supporters for a rally and speeches.
