Keep the General Winfield Scott Park name ! Your opinion can be heard by City Council
The Issue
Around 1943 the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor named the new (then) park close to the intersection of Avalon and Sepulveda Boulevard " General Winfield Scott Park ". The decision was made based on this civil war generals contrubitions towards a quick end to the long and difficult war and after the civil war he joined his friend Phineas Banning (founder of the port of Los Angeles and Willimgton) in funding and developing a railroad moving goods to downtown Los Angeles.
Our martial Arts group was founded and established its home at " Scott " Park and has been its base starting in 1971, under its founder Sensei Ken Tambara. During the last 6 plus years many students have now again called " Scott " Park home base.
History and traditions have been established with this name. Last years Carson Rose Bowl Parade float had the following embelished on it " Honoring our Past - Envisioning our future " for the world to see. Changing the park name after 75 years goes contrary to this statment. Discarding the past for the pleadings of heartstrings by a select few who have little regard for history, sets a profoundy bad precedence for this and future councils.
Therefore we the undersigned respectfully request that the name General Winfield Scott Park remain unchanged.
