Rename City of Berkeley and UC Berkeley named after slave owner

The Issue

City of Berkeley, CA and associated University of California, Berkeley are named after George Berkeley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Berkeley).

While he is a celebrated philosopher, between 1728 and 1831 Berkeley had bought and owned slaves at his Whitehall plantation in Rhode Island, and had profited from the fruits of slave labor. Please refer to http://www.yaleslavery.org/Endowments/e2schol.html for more details.

We cannot in our good conscience support City of Berkeley and associated institution of fine learning being named after a former slave owner, and demand that they be renamed.

City of Berkeley has started on the path to divest itself of slavery past and end systemic racism by renaming Jefferson and Washington elementary schools. Let's continue on this path and cleanse the City of Berkeley of slavery past completely!
