Protect our local restaurants during the pandemic

The Issue

Because of the Covid-19, restaurants owners are losing business. Since there is no dine-in option, all the business is pickup and delivery. Some restaurants owners had to lay off their employees, and some even shut their doors. Yet, delivery apps are cashing in big time.

With the current rates being between 20% - 32%, most of the profits go to the delivery apps, while restaurant owners are struggling to keep employees and keep the doors open. That doesn't sound exactly right to me. I'd love to see Calgary, and the hopefully whole Canada set fair measures so that our restaurants can still thrive and survive these tough economical times.

The restaurants I work with and I hope for the same resolution that Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has put in place: 15% maximum commission taken by delivery-apps during covid-19, until dine-in options are back to full capacity. This would allow a fair share of profits between delivery apps and restaurant owners, as times are tough and 100% of the business has moved from dine-in to pick up and delivery.

In brief, we would love to see the same emergency order set in place to cap delivery app fees to 15%, just like Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan did. This measure would tremenduously help restaurants, and therefore families, survive these tough economical times.

Thank you,

Rafael Duran
