Washington, D.C. suffered terribly throughout the 1980s and 1990s when it earned the moniker Murder Capital of the World. Violence overtook the city for thousands of people to be killed. Living standards and property values declined as many moved out for the safer suburbs. In the early 2000s, more police, stiffer penalties and more outreach programs helped a rebound for a downward trend in murder and violent crime. A safer Washington attracted more people to the city. For the first time in decades, there was an increase in population. Now...Washington is going backwards! A return to a high homicide rate and an upward homicide trend is now upon us! We will once again earn the title, Murder Capital of the World. WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN. According to the MPD, 2021 saw a 10 percent increase in homicides over 2020. Some 198 people were murdered in Washington in 2021, compared to 166 in 2020. The trend since 2011 are more murders every year. Enough is enough! THE CITIZENS OF WASHINGTON DC DEMAND IMMEDIATE ACTION FROM THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL. WE DEMAND MORE POLICE ON THE STREETS NOW...BY CAR, BY BIKES, ON FOOT. CRIMINALS WILL BE DETERRED BY A GREATER POLICE PRESENCE. PLEASE STOP THE KILLINGS. PLEASE STOP US FROM BECOMING, AGAIN, MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.
