HUG Detroit started in August of 2013.  It is the birth (brain) child of Sky Covington who shared her desire and passion to take one day out of the year to HUG Detroit and it's people ... to acknowledge the great accomplishments of this great city and the people there-in ... to thank those who stayed here through the storm and those who came to help us rise above and excel as we create a New Detroit and new ways of being and doing things together.

We envision HUG Detroit will spread city wide and that all block clubs will hold a Hug Detroit day for the residents in their neighborhood. People will have an opportunity to get out and meet their neighbors and express love, for the city and more importantly for the citizens that live in and or support Detroit.

“Heal the people … you heal the city”
Queen Afua, author of  “Sacred Woman” and “Heal Thyself”

With all the crime in Detroit, negative publicity, high unemployment rates and devastation in housing and land, the citizens of Detroit has chosen to have at least one day dedicated to the power of LOVE, POSSIBILITY, VISION and REVITALIZATION in this magnificent, resourceful, beautiful Metropolitan Detroit. Yes, one full day of celebrating the accomplishments that have been made by the dynamic people of Detroit and thanking those who either chose to stay here or have moved to Detroit to add to the power of resurrecting this Great City.

This festival provides an opportunity to celebrate & fellowship with our Detroit neighbors. Just another chance to remind each other of all the wonderful things that we, as a community, have in common. This is also another event to honor those who have lost their lives in the struggle to protect our community. This event showcases "The Best of Detroit” and attempts to change our youth, neighbors, co-workers, public officials and our own opinion of our great city. By coming together we'll continue to have an enormous impact on redefining Detroit’s present and future reputation.

There are multiple activities throughout the day...with a wide variety of spiritual, environmentally rich and entertaining performances. We have, from the Metro Detroit area, poets, storytellers, singers, dancers, musicians, speakers, fashion designers, workshops, vendors and arts & crafts for children and adults.

This day is funded by the people, for the people. Local businesses and neighbors have kept our festival afloat for the past five years. Also, businesses surrounding the festival, have received financial gain. Hugs & Handshakes, who doesn’t need that?

We humbly ask for your signature, in hopes we are granted permission, and approval, to officiate this neighboring event. Making Hug Detroit Day a city wide celebration. We hope Hug Detroit Day be become an annual reminder of where we come from, and what our city was founded on. The trust, respect and honesty of Hugs & handshakes.

Hug Detroit Day mission is to continue embracing Detroit with love, hope, peace & sincerity. Coming together in positive ways, andin every of living via businesses, travel, entertainment, recreation & crisis. With LOVE & RESPECT we will grow together , and our children will reap the awards….LET’S GET BACK TO HUGS & HANDSHAKE.
