Save Fort Walton Beach Extreme Sports Facility and Racetrack
Save Fort Walton Beach Extreme Sports Facility and Racetrack
The Issue
The Fort Walton Beach Extreme Sports Facility and Racetrack at 126 Jet Drive NW is the only complete extreme sports facility in the Gulf Coast. It is the home of hundreds of local bmx racers, freestyle riders, skateboarders and scooter riders. On December 31st the facility is scheduled to be destroyed for a project that does not support the current capabilities for the BMX community. Without the park the kids who make it their home will revert to riding the streets which is dangerous and destructive. The City has the opportunity to conserve the park and make it into a destination location for a growing sports industry. Destroying it for a low budget concrete skate plaza is a step backwards and displaces the hundreds of bmx riders that will have no other place to ride and train. The current budget for a skate plaza is insufficient to support the quality of park that bmx freestyle riders would be able to use and does not provide a facility for racers at all.
We ask that the City use the remaining budget to keep the current park open, improve the property appearance and maintain it with the help of a team of already established volunteers. Take pride in what it can be like you have the recreation center, soccer and baseball fields.
