Pop-Up Parklet Movement (PUP)

The question on everyone's mind as restrictions on Shelter In Place start to ease is, "How do we begin to open back up safely?"  Small businesses especially are struggling with the idea of operating at half capacity or less to adhere to social distancing rules.  How can the same amount of bills be paid with half the amount of customers, space and income? Businesses can only fit so many customers inside their establishments and have safe social distancing.

The solution to this problem is more space.  Businesses can't expand their interior walls so the only logical solution is to allow exterior space to be used to seat and serve customers.  A Pop-Up Parklet (PUP) is the perfect solution!

This is a call to Mayor London Breed, the SFMTA and the City of San Francisco to allow local bars, restaurants and other small businesses to utilize the parking spaces and potentially a lane or two of the street to set up, free of charge, temporary, safe, social distancing spaces to conduct their business.  This is also a call to allow certain appropriate streets to be closed to make larger Pop-Up Parklets.

Each business can design their Pop-Up Parklet as creatively as they like and in essence, this is a fun and uplifting way to make creative, safe spaces where businesses can reopen.

Guidelines such as sectioned off areas, with a limited capacity, will be a part of this process and all social distancing rules will be followed.

Many other cities are allowing temporary safe public spaces to be created and we are asking San Francisco to do the same!  Please sign this petition and forward it to everyone you know to support a city-wide Pop-Up Parklet Movement!
