Improved parking enforcement in the Historic Derby Street Neighborhood.
Improved parking enforcement in the Historic Derby Street Neighborhood.
The Issue
The Historic Derby Street Neighborhood in Salem, MA is a primarily residential neighborhood made up of narrow, one way streets. Many homes are now multi-family, with a smattering of single family homes. Driveways are a rarity, so residents pay for parking permits, and with their resident permit they are able to purchase visitor permits for $1.00 each, which are for short term use by visitors. For years residents have struggled with people parking without permits, with visitor permits being used for extended periods, with driveways being blocked. Visitors to Salem don't care about getting a $20.00 ticket, it's often a small price to pay for getting a parking spot in the heart of town. Residents have asked repeatedly for more enforcement and have been told that it will happen - but it never does. Residents are forced to call the SPD non-emergency line for parking issues as the parking office does not have the staff to monitor this area. We are asking that our City Councillor Robert McCarthy and Mayor Driscoll listen to our concerns and address them properly instead of simply making empty promises.
