Cottonwood Heights Off-leash Dog Park

Cottonwood Heights Off-leash Dog Park
The Issue
In May 2006 an article with the headline "Cottonwood Heights plans fenced pup park" was published in the Salt Lake Tribune. This article announced plans for a new off-leash dog park located in the east side of Cottonwood Heights. Cottonwood Heights Mayor Cullimore is quoted as saying "If we can't get it done this year, we'll continue on it next year." That was 10 years ago and Cottonwood Heights still does not have a designated dog park. Over the last 10 years the city has provided its citizens with new parks, soccer fields, tennis courts, playgrounds and pickle ball courts. Mountain View Park was created in Cottonwood Heights in 2012 at the cost of $1.6 million and included a splash pad for children but no dog park.
Although Cottonwood Heights is located near several canyons, these canyons are watershed areas and dogs are prohibited. There are no open spaces in Cottonwood Heights where dogs can legally run and play off leash.
Dogs, their owners and the entire community will benefit from the development of a dog park. A dog park in Cottonwood Heights will provide:
- a designated safe area for dogs to run and socialize off-leash
- opportunity for dog owners to interact and develop a community
- reduction in leash violations
- reduction in barking and other nuisance behaviors
- accessible area for elderly and disabled dog owners to exercise their pets
We are asking that the Mayor and City Council of Cottonwood Heights prioritize developing an off-leash dog park. We would like an appropriate site identified for the dog park, funds allocated, and plans implemented during this next year.
