Petition on Banning the Use of Plastic in Quezon City

The Issue

Here in Quezon City, we always use plastic in our everyday life. In fact, I think that we Filipinos cannot live without it. Many plastic waste are scattered all over the place and it should not be burn because it takes a lot of years that the plastic waste will turn into ashes. We also still have the plastics from the years back and it is piling up too much.

Data from the  2015 study "Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean" shows that the Philippines wastes 6,237,653 kg (6875.84 tons) of plastic per day, of which 81% is mismanaged. Mayor Herbert Bautista implemented city ordinances to reduce the plastic waste here in Quezon City like Ordinance No. SP-2127 banning the use of plastics and Styrofoam packaging within city hall premises. Ordinance No. SP-2140 and SP-2103 mandated the reduction of the use of plastic bags and collection of environmental fees for each plastic bag used within the city. It somehow lessen our use of plastic but this is not enough. Some people just ignored the ordinance and still uses plastic and styrofoam.

If we don't act on our problem which is banning the use of plastic waste in our city, more plastic wastes will be added in our landfills here in the Philippines. Another one is if we continue burning the plastic waste, our ozone layer will be gone and it will much cause a big problem because it plays a big role here on earth. It protects us from the UV light coming from the sun. Which could lead to the damage of living things here on earth.

There are many advantages if we ban the use of plastic in QC. We are not only eliminating plastic but we are also helping our marine life improve. Our living creatures  will not be eating plastics scattered in the ocean. The drainage systems of our city will be more efficient. The plastic litter wont clog any drainage systems that can lead to flooding in the area. The private sectors can help us to remove the use of plastic by starting in their products, like there packaging to be eco-friendly This is also an act of environmental justice. The QC Government would help us to make our petition possible.

There can be many possible solutions regarding this issue. Mayor Bautista already implemented ordinances which can help in our problem. We can start helping this problem by starting it with ourselves. Start using reusable straws and eco bags to lessen the use of plastic. We can also help our community by participating in clean up drives. It lessens the plastic waste scattered in the streets.

I encourage all the people who are living in the area to help our city grow cleaner and healthier without the use of plastics. This can be tough but it will also benefit us in the future. It can be an improvement for the country as well because we are making small steps that can help our country be eco-friendly.
