Dudley Stubbs Jr. started this petition to Mayor John Tory, Toronto City Council

We see that Mayor Tory and the City of Toronto fails to recognize the Nubian(black) Community in its values. For years, we have seen the many flags raised to commemorate the various groups and "communities". We see that Mayor Tory and City Council fails to recognize August 1, which is the day when slaves in Canada were freed. And we commemorate with the U.N.I.A. flag of the Red, Black & Green. We demand that Mayor Tory and the Toronto City Council not only recognize, realize and acknowledge, but to also give it the same recognition, realization and acknowledgement as they do to all other commemoration and flag raising.

We demand that the month of August, starting in 2020, be recognized, realized and acknowledged as EMANCIPATION MONTH where we, the Nubian Community can celebrate, reminiscence and discuss our culture and contributions to this country when we were brought here against our will.
