RUBY GREENBERG & HER BAND BENEFIT FOR SAVE CHEYENNE. SHARE IT & SPREAD THE LOVE!
Don't miss this evening of folk, jazz and original music with local folk songwriter and singer John Spengler opening for headliner Ruby Greenberg & Her Band. Ruby was born and raised in Colorado Springs. Cheyenne Canon was her backyard, and she spent many happy days splashing in Cheyenne Creek, skipping to Canon Elementary, and hunting for adventure on the high trails of North Cheyenne Canon Park. Ruby is an ally and supporter of Save Cheyenne and their efforts to protect public lands and stop the commercialization of Strawberry Fields by the Broadmoor.
Ruby’s early musical experience included intensive instrumental and vocal study. The music programs from Cheyenne Mt. schools were also a major support and formative experience for her. Throughout elementary, junior high, and high school levels, the excellent quality of the band, orchestra, and choir programs were a strong factor in Ruby’s musical education. She went on to perform in community theatre and joined local and school choirs that would fuel her love of singing through adulthood. In high school, she performed locally and nationally with Cheyenne Mountain High School's choir and band programs. Ruby moved to NYC in 2013 and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the New School for Jazz and Performing Arts. As a performing artist in Manhattan, she often uses nature as a creative muse in her songwriting.
Ruby brings an outstanding group of jazz musicians from New York City. The band was formed at The New School in Greenwich Village and features saxophonist Will Brown, pianist Mike Sheelar, guitarist Prawit Siriwat, bassist John Koozin, and drummer Pele Greenberg (no relation to Ruby J). As composers, bandleaders, and working musicians in NY, they have thousands of hours of experience in improvisation, recording, teaching, and performing nationally and internationally. The band will perform original music, covers, and standards in a fusion of jazz, folk, and acoustic pop.
John Spengler is a well known, local folk artist who just completed a new 6 song EP. He is a singer and songwriter heavily influenced by Neil Young, Dan Fogelberg, and Jackson Browne. Inspired by his experiences with and observations of the human condition, he writes about life - and, sometimes, infuses it with humor. One of his most popular songs, South Park Sheriff, is about a $550 speeding ticket John "earned" in South Park 30 years ago. He is also an avid outdoor enthusiast and environmentalist and has been an active, vocal voice in protecting open spaces. Alex Fermanis, a multi-instrumentalist, naturally gifted musician and songwriter, plays on John's CD and will be accompanying him on pedal steel. Buckle up, it will be quite a ride!
Join us for a celebration of our most precious public lands and an evening of innovative, moving music.
