Dear Friends -- First, I am delighted to ask you to mark your calendars for a wonderful fundraiser with headliner Ruby Greenberg & Her Band. I have known Ruby since she was a baby, and it is yet another reminder of the circle of life to now share her talents as young woman. We look forward to a magical evening. All proceeds go to Save Cheyenne. Hope to see you there, and please do share it with your friends. Here is the link to the event on Facebook where you can buy tickets at a discount in advance as well as RSVP and invite your friends: https://www.facebook.com/events/205823526749825/ Ivywild is an intimate venue; so, we encourage you to purchase tickets early. First come, first serve. There is no word yet on our "certiorari" petition to the State Supreme Count. We are now very much in the window when it could come any day. We will let yet you know just as soon as we know anything ourselves. Appeal of the North Cheyenne Canyon Park master plan: I assume most of you saw the media coverage and know that the June 26th hearing of Jim Bensberg's Cheyenne Canyon Conservationists' appeal (supported by many of us in Save Cheyenne) ended in a denial of the appeal by the City Council in a 6-3 vote after three hours of presentations and discussion. Supporting our side were Yolanda Avila, Bill Murray and Richard Skorman. Our thanks to them. Despite the disappointing outcome, we came away feeling the appeal had been worth the effort. Council members heard in detail about the concerns we had about the plan -- particularly some of the "toolbox" items, such as shuttles and reconfiguration of the South Canyon, which still lurk in the plan as future "considerations" and the continued overemphasis on "marketing" of the park by whatever name they try to call it. A small win came in the denial with a "friendly amendment" by Don Knight which took out the word "minor" in references to amendments to the plan if the Parks Department ever decided to resurrect any of the objectionable toolbox items. A city attorney did argue that there was no difference between "major" and "minor" amendments in park master plan, but most of us felt the dropping of "minor" was at least a cosmetic improvement. And, finally, the appeal was clearly a good consciousness-raising and educational effort with the Council. Councilman Knight stated that they had had more emails this year related to the plan and the appeal than any other subject -- except for urban deer hunting. Broadmoor shuttle buses: As those of you living in the Cheyenne Canyon area know, there has been a lot of discussion and concern about the volume of Broadmoor shuttle buses now plying local streets between the Norris Penrose events center and Seven Falls after the hotel decided they could no longer accommodate cars belonging to local Seven Falls visitors in their limited Golden Bee parking area. Likewise, the Broadmoor's continued practice of loading and unloading shuttle passengers in the public right-of-way outside the Seven Falls gate (rather than doing so on their own property inside the gate) has resulted in concerns about safety and disruptions in the flow of traffic at this already difficult intersection. To further examine these concerns, City Council President Richard Skorman is hosting a neighborhood meeting at the Sacred Grounds coffee bar/restaurant at 5:00 PM on Thursday, July 26th. Also present will be representatives from the relevant city departments -- police, traffic and parks. Attend if you can -- and, of course, you can make your concerns known in emails to AllCouncil@springsgov.com and by calling the Gold Hill Police station at 719-385-2100. The latter is particularly important in terms to building support for any possible changes in current practices. In concluding, I must once again ask for your continued financial support. We have been blessed with enormous support across the nation, but legal defenses are expensive. As always, checks can be mailed to Save Cheyenne, P. O. Box 60298, Colorado Springs, CO 80960 or donations can be made by credit card online at SaveCheyenne.org. Our most sincere thanks in advance. Kent Obee -on behalf of the Save Cheyenne Board
