Mayor John Biggs: Reverse the decision to end Meals on Wheels service in Tower Hamlets.

Mayor John Biggs: Reverse the decision to end Meals on Wheels service in Tower Hamlets.
The Issue
This petition is to urge the council to reconsider the reckless decision of ending the meals on wheels service in Tower Hamlets.
Tower Hamlets has the highest rates of pensioner poverty in England. The Meals and Wheels service is a lifeline for elderly residents in the local area, who otherwise would not receive a warm or nutritious meal.
The Covid 19 outbreak has amplified these inequalities, where elderly residents in these areas are some of the most vulnerable in not receiving a warm meal . This is why the need for meals and wheels service in Tower Hamlets has never been more important. Charities in the borough such as Neighbors in Poplar have shared that some elderly residents have not received a warm or nutritious meal for over 8 weeks. This is completely unacceptable.
The council should be providing this service and this economic burden should not be put onto local charities or organisations.
Therefore, I am urging Tower Hamlets Council to reconsider this decision and to ensure that elderly residents can still receive this important service.
