In the wake of the recent elections, much has been said regarding media bias. In the months leading up to the election, CollegeAvenueIndy.org noted many examples of one-sided reporting about the Red Line and Marion Transit Plan in our local media. On October 20th, CollegeAvenueIndy.org was particularly disappointed to hear an NPR broadcast that featured Lori Kaplan from IndyConnect (a consortium comprised of IndyGo, Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority, and the Metropolitan Planning Organization). Ms. Kaplan was advocating for the Marion County Transit Referendum. While on the air, Ms. Kaplan promoted an "educational" meeting for the transit plan on October 20th that featured "free snacks", "free transportation", and "free child care". CollegeAvenueIndy.org noted that NPR (National "Public" Radio) receives "public" funding; therefore, its charter requires it to remain politically unbiased. With this in mind, CollegeAvenueIndy.org contacted the local NPR affiliate via its website to express disapproval of NRP's promotion of the local transit initiative on the October 20th show. On October 21st, CollegeAvenueIndy.org was more than a little surprised to receive a phone call from Lloyd Wright, President and CEO of WFYI Public Media in Indianapolis (Mr. Wright oversees Indiana's flagship PBS and NPR member stations). Mr. Wright stated that he had re-listened to the October 20th IndyConnect broadcast and he said, "We got it wrong." "We blew it." Mr. Wright was very conciliatory and humble (to the point that it made us feel uneasy for having pointed out the transgression). At the conclusion of a cordial 3 to 5 minute call, Mr. Wright mentioned that possibility of re-airing an NPR segment from earlier in the year that featured Brian Luellen and Justin Stuehrenberg from from IndyGo who were championing the Transit Plan. Well... talk about throwing gasoline on the fire. We could not believe our ears. Was Mr. Wright offering to amend the October 20th pro-transit transgression by re-airing another PRO-transit show from earlier in the year. We diplomatically pointed out that this would not be necessary; but we were left wondering... Did Mr. Wright make a mistake or was his offer some kind of cryptic threat. Anyway, CollegeAvenueIndy.org decided to research National "Public" Radio. Our research led us to a seemingly credible and well-researched article that makes serious allegations about conflicts of interest at various levels of NPR, from journalistic to management, thereby calling into question the operating principles and ethics of NPR. CollegeAvenueIndy.org noted that there does NOT seem to be an overwhelming public presence in National Public Radio. They appear to accept massive amounts of funds from government and private interests which presents obvious challenges their neutrality (despite claims to the contrary). Evidence in the attached article speaks volumes and seems to confirm some NPR biases. The article also mentions some very questionable NPR funding sources that include: Lockheed Martin, George Soros, Walmart, McDonalds, and the Brookings Institute. According to the article, only 31% of NPR's funding actually comes from listener pledges. The remaining 69% comes from from businesses, governments, and philanthropic gifts from "charitable" foundations.
