Dee Dukes started this petition to Mayor Jim Kenney and

This petition is in opposition to any previous petitions calling for MLK Drive to be closed permanently. We represent the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods most impacted who are calling for the permanent Opening of MLK Drive upon completion of any current repairs and umprovements in our City resulting from the pandemic closure.

As our neighbors begin to return to work safely and many of our teachers and students have returned to in-person instruction, we are in a much better place now that many of our residents have also been vaccinated. The closure during the pandemic encouraged residents to safely travel outdoors for recreation while maintaining social distancing. So the closure of MLK Drive provided additional space for these activities to be conducted safely.

As many life-long Philadelphia residents feel, the continued closure has now become a hardship for those who prior to the pandemic used MLK Drive as an easy access road as well as an alternative to I-76 as a safe, traffic calming road venturing to work in Center City from many neighborhoods. It was also used primarily on the weekend by residents for fun family gatherings and events. MLK Drive also referred to as "West River Drive" was and continues to remain a pertinent and crucial roadway for many residents especially from our Black & Brown Communities without which, an easy and stress-free commute would not be possible. The permanent closure of MLK Drive is not an option and would serve to further restrict, exclude and isolate residents, which historically has been the practice in many Communities of color, from using MLK Drive as a mode of safe travel to work in Center City from surrounding neighborhoods.

We applaud the prior steps taken to allow this roadway closure to happen during the pandemic in the best interest of Philadelphia residents but now the re-imagining efforts for permanent closure must NO longer be a consideration in the best interest of All Philadelphia residents.
