An adoption story, Nala, 3 dogs at OCAS for over 100 days, our featured local rescue
Nala A470438 is SAFE an out of OCAS. She has a wonderful foster to adopt mom. Nala and her new mom will go through training with a local trainer. We wish her all the best in her new furever home!!

An adopters experience at OCAS: “I have been to OCAS 4 times in the past three days. I am a very experienced dog owner. On the first day visiting OCAS I adopted a dog and had to wait for him to be neutered. He was confiscated for poor living conditions and was obviously used for breeding and fighting (although this was not in his notes). Firstly, the conditions there are horrendous. The heat alone will put any one in a mood including the dogs. Dogs are lying in their own urine simply because the concrete is cooler for them then their beds. Secondly, have you seen a very well behaved, trained male dog react to a female in heat? They will go through walls to get to her! It can change a dog’s whole demeanor! The dogs that are used for the above purposes get no other training except fight to maim or worse, make more babies for money or fighting. Humans failed these dogs. OCAS has failed these dogs. All they know is fight, eat and breed. There has been no "cuddling", there is no " oh what a good doggy" all they know is kill or be killed. I'm not saying take an aggressively behaving dog and put him with someone that has kids or other animals but there has got to be someone that can take the time to nurture, love and train them (basic and obedience). Most dogs are workers. Give them something to do, to achieve. All they want is to show you they did something good to gain that affection of "thank you" what a good girl or boy. They need patience not death or loneliness that will lead to antisocial behaviors that will lead to more aggression. I don't know where the "it did something to me, kill it or let it be killed or lock it up for life" ideology comes from. But if no one taught it right from wrong ever in any sense, fighting to be fed or protect itself is all it’s ever known. "It won't do what we want it to, so let’s just lock it up, give it a shot and watch it die is good for your conscience?" Rehabilitation would be better obviously. All Elayne (and many others) is asking for is for someone who has the time, patience, aptitude to take the dog in and give it what it needs. Maybe someone who knows someone before the animal is killed. Let’s give these dogs real chance and not half-a** it.”
These three dogs are the longest residents at OCAS.
Meet Cano (A470008) has been with us for 100 days. This isn't a milestone; it is not a reason to celebrate. It's heartbreaking. Cano, like most of the dogs that come into our facility, came in as a stray. He had been found tied up behind an animal hospital, all alone and very fearful. Cano has had a difficult time adjusting to shelter life, mostly because of his fear and distrust of other dogs.
Meet Coco (A467278) is a 9-year-old female dog who weighs approximately 60 pounds. Coco was initially surrendered to our shelter back in February. Adopted 5/6for two weeks then returned to OCAS on 5/6/21
Meet Ziggie (A430704) Ziggie loves human attention and willingly gives kisses and love. She is a volunteer and staff favorite. She has even spent time hanging out in staff offices. Ziggie does need to be an only pet; however, who can blame her for wanting all of the attention when she has been abandoned so many times?!

We continue to be in a financial crisis due to 4 dogs in boarding w/ no foster offers Mazi is currently undergoing weekly chemo treatments. He has spent the last TWO months in BOARDING since he lost his foster. We currently have a bill of $1415 just for him alone. We desperately not only need donations to cover his bill but we need to get him OUT OF BOARDING. He does not deserve to continue chemo in a kennel setting. Mazi is UTD, neutered, HW- & microchipped. He’s good w kids and other dogs but does best w females dogs. Cats are unknown. He walks well on a leash and is house trained. We are seeking a committed foster or adopter to open their home to this cancer baby. He has around 6-8 more chemo treatments to go.

Please contact Orange County leaders and ask why the shelter is so hot and why are animals lying in urine and feces. If you do not want to make it comfortable for the dogs...What about the workers, the volunteers and the potential adopters? Everyone is miserable in this heat and humidity.
