Heather Smith started this petition to Mayor, City of Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan

For over a year now, the west side of Greenlake has been largely inaccessible for the vast majority of Seattle residents, as well as visitors, as the city of Seattle has allowed RVs to take over all available legal parking spaces, resulting in the pollution of the lake and the surrounding park grounds (including oil spill, litter and human waste), denying parking and accessibility for residents and visitors, making it unsafe and unwelcoming for children and families, and discriminatorily providing a protected status for RV owners.

In addition, both Greenlake and Woodland Park have become popular camping destinations, with public shelters being taken over, trash, needles and personal belongings being left everywhere, the trees, bushes and flowers have been destroyed in many areas, human waste is frequently found, graffiti has marred murals and bridges, and it is becoming a haven for drug dealers and users.  It is not safe for the people living there and it is not safe for the visitors. Visitors are frequently harassed and intimidated, and it is unsafe for children. Many of us have had personal, specific encounters and have our children yelled and cursed at by the campers. This is a park, not a campground. This is a public site, not a private camp enterprise. This is a place for children, families, pet owners, adults showing respect for the park and others; not a place where people with the greatest needs and instabilities can be ignored by the city, to the detriment of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Greenlake and Woodland Park need to return to being places that are safe and accessible for ALL, where park rules are applied to EVERYONE EQUALLY and park resources and facilities are clean, safe and accessible for ALL VISITORS. No overnight parking, no littering, no waste disposal, no destruction of property, wetlands, paths, grounds, no camping.  We understand the Covid crisis has created significant challenges, but the Seattle City Council’s inaction has created a terrible situation for those experiencing homelessness and for the communities who should feel safe in our city parks. A solution must be found, and quickly.
