America is at a crucial time to reflect and determine what its legacy will be to generations to come.
Christopher Columbus left a legacy- Enslavement, including girls sold to adult men as young as 9, murder, looting, and destruction of human beings in North America.
It is time society stops honoring individuals who destroyed cultures and families, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, and whose actions contributed to ending the way of life of millions of people on the continent. Because of this knowledge, many cities across the nation have already declared Columbus Day “Indigenous People’s Day” to honor the people whose ancestors were desecrated by Columbus’ actions.
Columbus City Council and Mayor Andrew Ginther: Remove the statue of Christopher Columbus in front of City Hall in Columbus, OH. Take the step to show, with action, that central Ohio will lead the state and country with creating an America where equality rings true. Let it be replaced with a symbol of equality, justice, and freedom. Create an opportunity for local artists to create that symbol as a legacy for generations to come.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT ERASING HISTORY. Let Columbus leadership work with the Ohio History Museum for the statue to be placed in their care for the purposes of educating residents about Christopher Columbus’ full history with indigenous people and why the capital was named after him.
